What do I need to know about carpal tunnel syndrome?

If you are a Fort Mitchell worker who spends most of your time in an office environment, you may think you’re immune from serious workplace injuries. However, carpal tunnel syndrome is a very real concern for office workers just like you, as it can be increasingly debilitating over time.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, carpal tunnel can occur when the tissues around the inner pathway of your wrist (known as the carpal tunnel) are impacted by swelling. This swelling causes pressure to be applied to the median nerve, which results in a number of concerning symptoms that can affect the entire hand. Symptoms are usually relatively minor at first, and may even appear sporadically until the condition advances.

If you are afflicted with carpal tunnel, you will experience a feeling of weakness in the affected hand that renders simple tasks exceedingly difficult. Additionally, you may experience a burning sensation, as well as jolting pain that travels from your hand to the shoulder. Sleeping with wrists in a bent position can cause symptoms to worsen throughout the night, and pain can also extend through the hand to each finger.

When it comes to causes of carpal tunnel, there are a few factors that often work in conjunction with each other. For instance, you may be afflicted with physical conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis) that contribute to wrist discomfort. In addition to physical ailments, you may also develop carpal tunnel as a result of certain activities that have been shown to cause swelling within the wrist. Repetitive motion also plays a role, especially when the same motions occur over an extended period.
