What are 3 reasons why I should create estate plans today?

You may not think that having a will and estate plans are all that important. According to USA Today, you are not alone; 15 percent of Americans do not feel they need estate plans and 27 percent of them are not in a rush to create them. You should reconsider your stance on this issue and prepare for the future.

Estate plans are important documents you can use to protect your estate and loved ones. Take some time to consider the following three reasons to create your will and estate plans right away.

1. Tomorrow is not promised

You may not want to think about all the things that can happen in a moment's notice that could leave you severely ill or dead. But, if you do not plan for tomorrow, by the time it arrives it could be too late. If you become seriously ill, you may lose the ability to make critical decisions about your care and personal affairs. If you die, your estate could pass on to people you do not know instead of the individuals you care about and want to provide for.

2. To keep the peace

The passing of a loved one is enough to send some families into chaos. Besides bickering over your funeral arrangements, your loved ones could end up arguing over your possessions and assets. Estate plans, especially a will can minimize confusion by informing your relatives about how you want your assets and wealth to be distributed. Anyone who questions or disputes your will and estate plans must file a dispute with probate court.

3. Makes the probate process easier

Many people believe that if they leave behind wills, their loved ones do not have to worry about probate court. However, everything you leave behind must be probated, whether you leave behind a will or not. Estates that have wills and plans often pass through the process faster and with fewer complications because there are fewer decisions to make regarding the distribution of your assets and settling of your estate.

Having estate plans is one of the most responsible things you can do to plan for you and your loved ones' future. Take some time to review your assets and finances now so you can take measures to protect them.
