How do the “fatal four” pose dangers to construction workers?

Those who work in construction put their lives on the line every day. It may not seem like a dangerous job to anyone looking in from the outside, but those in the industry understand the myriad of dangers that are a regular part of the job. If you or a loved one is a construction worker in Fort Mitchell, it may help to understand the most serious dangers faced by employees on a construction site.

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration reported 899 construction worker fatalities across the country in 2014. While there are many hazards you might face on any given site, four in particular stand out as the most deadly. These are known throughout the industry as the “fatal four.” Safety experts say that if the “fatal four” were eliminated, 435 construction workers’ lives would be saved each year.

“Fatal four” accidents include falls, being caught between objects, being struck by objects and electrocution. By far, falling from scaffolding, buildings, machinery and other heights cause the majority of construction worker deaths and serious injuries. At a construction site, you might also be hit by a construction truck, caught in heavy machinery or shocked by an electrical cable that was not de-energized.

Many workplace accidents are the result of safety violations, and workers are often eligible for workers’ compensation. However, since workers’ compensation law may be complicated, you should remember that the information in this blog is general in nature and is not meant to be taken as legal advice.
