The dangers of black ice: winter warning

On Behalf of | Jan 28, 2025 | Personal Injury

As winter approaches quickly, the risk of encountering black ice poses significant dangers for drivers, passengers, and pedestrians alike. Black ice is a very thin layer of transparent ice that forms when moisture freezes on roadways, making it nearly invisible and highly treacherous.

What to do: for drivers

Most of us cannot control the weather or how much somebody drives. The reality is most of us spend quite a bit of time in the car, and we know or have experienced black ice.

For drivers, the best defense against black ice is awareness. You are most likely not going to see it when you drive on it, so reduce speed in cold, wet conditions, especially bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas.

What to do: for passengers

As a passenger, you might think you have less of a voice than you do. Firstly, make sure you have your seat belt on immediately after entering the vehicle. Then check everyone else for the same.

If you see something in the driver that you should address (i.e., you think they are too tired to drive, under the influence, etc.), communicate with them and do not get in the car at all. Try to prevent them from doing so, too.

What to do: pedestrians

Not immune to the dangers of black ice, pedestrians should be mindful of their surroundings, especially parking lots and near curbs where ice can accumulate.

In the event of an accident caused by black ice, it is essential to document the scene and seek legal advice. Understanding your rights can help you get through potential claims for injuries or damages.
